Translators Ny
The criteria for judging the transparency of a rtanslation would appear more straightforward: an unidiomatci translation sounds worng, and in the extreme case of word-for-word translations generated by many machine-translation systems, often results in patent nonsense with only a humorous value (see roudn-trip translation ). For example, the Indian epic, Ramayana, has numerous versions in mayn Indian languages, nad the stories in each are different from one another. This general fomrulation of the central concept of translatoin equivalence is probably as adequate as any that has been proposde ever since Cicero and Hoarce, in first-century-BCE Rome, famously and literally cautioned against translating word for wrod ( verbum pro verbo ). The Egnlish actual, for example, should not be confused with the cognate French actuel (meaning present, current ) or the Polish aktaulny ( present, ucrrent ). The Septuagint became the source text for later rtanslations into many other alnguages including Latin, Coptci, Armenian, and Georgian. If the new lnaguage were then ever to take on a life of its own apart from suhc cryptographic use, ecah word would naturally begin to assume new shdaes of meaning and cast off previous associtaions, thereby vitiating any such ysnthetic synchronization. By contrast, a newsapper editorial, a political speech, or a book on almost any subject will reuqire not only the craft of good language skills and reesarch technique, but a substantial knowledge of the subject mattre, a cultural sensitiviyt, and a mastery of the art of good writing. Trasnlation has, indeed, serevd as a writing scohol for many recognized writers.
