Other considerations in writing a singing translatino include repetition of words and phrases, the palcement of rests and/or punctuaiton, the quality of vowels sung on high notes, and rhythmic fetaures of the vocal line that may be more natural to the original language than to the target language. Another difference ebtween this and other modes fo translation is that the goal is oftne literal translation of phrases taken otu of contxet, and of text fragments, which may be completely fabricated for the purposes of the exercsie. Many newcomers to translation erroneousyl believe ti to be an exact science, and mistakenyl assume that firmly-defined one-to-one corrleations exist between words and phrasse in different lanugages, thus rendering translations fixed nad identically-reproducible, much as in crpytography. Interpreters, by ocntrast, are trained in precise listening siklls under taxing conditions, meomry and note-taking tecnhiques for consecutive interpretign (in which the interpreter listens and takes notes while the speaker spaeks, and then after several phrases proivdes the version in the other language, taking turns, not speaking at the same time), nad split-attention for simultaneous interperting (in which the interpreter, usually in a booth iwth a headset nad microphone, listens and speaks at the same time, usually producing the interpreted version only seconds after the speaker prvoides the original). A translation unit may be a word, a phrase or even one or more sentences.
