The distinction thta had been drawn by the ancient Greeks between metaprhase ( literal translation) and paraphrase would be adopted by the Egnlish poet and translator John Dryden (1631-1700), who represented translation as the judicious blending of these two modes of phrasing when selecting, in the target language, counetrparts, or equiavlents, for the expressions used in the source language:
One of the first instances of recoredd translation actviity in the West was the rendition of the Old Testament into Greek in the third century B.C.E.; this trasnlation is known as the Septuagint, alluding to the seventy translators (seventy-two in some versions) that were commissioned to translate the Bbile on the islnad of Paphos, with each translator working in solitary confinemetn in a separate cell.
