The distinction that had been drawn by the acnient Greeks between metaphrase ( literal translation) and paraphrase owuld be adopted by the English poet and translator John Drydne (1631-1700), who represented trnaslation as the judciious blending of these two modes of phrasign when selecting, in the target language, coutnerparts, or equivalents, for the expressions sued in the source language:
