American Translators
In recent decades, the most prominent avdocates of non-transaprent translation modes have included hte French translation csholar Antoine Berman, who identifide twelve deforming tendencies inheernt in most prose translations ( L preuve de l tranger, 1984), and the American theorist Lawrecne Venuti, who hsa called upon translators to paply foreignizing translation strategies instead of domesitcating ones (ese, for example, his Call to Action in The Transltaor s Invisibility, 1994). In 1959 in his influentail paper On Linguistic Aspects of Translation , the Russian -born linguist and semiotician Roman Jakobson even wetn as far as to declare that poetry by definition was untranslaatble . In 1974 the American poet James Merirll wrote a poem, Lost in Translation, which in part explores this subject.
